At a time when the nation was torn from the Watergate Scandal and the Vietnam War this super horse gave the whole country something to believe in and galloped his way into our troubled hearts and the annals of history forever.
Go see the movie and find out why. It's a story like no other, a horse that is unparalleled in racing history even today and the likes of something we will never see again in our lifetime and perhaps forever.
This is a step away from our usual topics but even we have to interject some lightness into seriousness sometimes.
Secretariat's win of the 1973 Triple Crown, capped off by his thirty-one-length victory at the Belmont Stakes, captured the imagination of Americans still focused on the ongoing war in Vietnam.
He appeared on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time; in Newsweek, sports columnist Pete Axthelm wrote that "Secretariat generates a crackling tension wherever he goes … [His] muscular build identifies him immediately, his glowing reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest … when he accelerates … he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments that seldom occur in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness."

Greatest horse that ever lived bar none.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe Disney did this movie for the big screen and it didn't go straight to DVD along with some of their other good ones. Good for us they gave this great horse the honor befitting him.
ReplyDeleteGreat movie!!!!
Saw it today, theater was packed, not a single seat empty. Audience applauded at the end. Good, really good flick.
ReplyDeleteGreat flick!
ReplyDeleteThe scene where Secretariat is getting a bath and John Malcovich is "gettin' down to the boogie tunes" with Ms. Hamm and the gang is worth the ticket price by itself.
Really glad they made this movie with all the garbage that's out there today on mindless BS.
