Birmingham-Metro Chapter NAACP Presents Grand Town Hall Meeting on the Environment

Panelists Will Focus on Local Pollution Threats: Shepherd Bend Mine and “DeadlyDeception”

Birmingham – The Birmingham-Metro Chapter of the NAACP will present a Grand Town Hall Meeting and Public Forum about the Environment on Friday, October 14th from 7:00 to 8:15 PM.

Panelists will focus on two local pollution threats: the Shepherd Bend Mine proposal across the river from Birmingham’s drinking water intake facility and the recent “Deadly Deception” controversy in the Collegeville area.  The free public event will take place at Glen Iris Elementary School 1115 11th Street South Birmingham, AL 35205.

Panelists will include representatives from the Alabama Rivers Alliance, Birmingham Faith in Action, Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Cahaba Riverkeeper, Citizens Opposed to Strip Mining on the Black Warrior River, Coalition of Alabama Students for the Environment, Collegeville area residents, GASP, Green Initiative at UAB, University of Alabama Environmental Council, and University of Montevallo Environmental Club.

“We are honored that the Birmingham-Metro Chapter NAACP invited us to join these esteemed panelists,” said Charles Scribner, Executive Director of Black Warrior Riverkeeper.  “The Shepherd Bend Mine poses a unique threat to Birmingham’s drinking water.  This forum presents an exciting opportunity to increase public awareness about the proposed coal mine and the University of Alabama’s potential role in stopping it.”

  1. Now there is a banding together that really makes sense! Will the national NAACP back up the Alabama chapter? Aren't they mad enough yet from what is happening in north Birmingham courtesy of Walter Energy and do nothing ADEM?
How many more black folks have to die before they are?
    We'll see.

  3. It's more interesting to ponder who won't be there that has a hand in this colossal bad idea.
I'm sure we could all think of a few names for our respective lists.

  4. Just so there's no confusion, the colossal bad idea I refer to is the SB Mine and continuing pollution in Birmingham.
I think the meeting and partnership is an excellent idea!

  5. All good Bax.
I participated rather in a roundabout way in a conversation about this issue on the SS this evening. Mad to report that the shortsightedness of some acquaintances don't understand the presence of the NAACP in these subjects. Try as I might to explain the race disparity that exists in Alabama and the placement of polluting facilities, they still didn't get it.
It frightens the hell out of me that people with such a impeded ability to reason can vote.
There oughta be a law I tell you.....

  6. Count me in. Wouldn't miss this one. I really hope it is not too politically correct though. That happens much more than it should. These perpetrators of human misery don't play nice and fair and I don't think they should be coddled!

  7. I can't find anything about the latest on the Maurice William "Sir William" Campbell case. When is his "sentencing" or "whatever" or his he clean and free? This comment is, of course, unrelated to Oct. 3, article.

Lots of cases in the ND being sealed these days. Makes one wonder is it to preserve integrity in particular cases (a common claim) or something else?

    Press is predictably SILENT.

  9. How can he have the "clout" to be sealed?? The "public" has a right to know what "the public's 7.3 million was used for or where it is as we blog!! Will we know if he will serve time or consequences in this scam?

  10. ANON--

You have to understand what Motion in limine is:

    Motion in limine

A "motion in limine" asks the court to decide that certain evidence may or may not be presented to the jury at the trial. A motion in limine generally addresses issues which would be prejudicial for the jury to hear in open court, even if the other side makes a timely objection which is sustained, and the judge instructs the jury to disregard the evidence. For example, the defendant may ask the court to rule that evidence of a prior conviction that occurred a long time ago should not be allowed into evidence at the trial because it would be more prejudicial than probative. If the motion is granted, then evidence regarding the conviction could not be mentioned in front of the jury, without first approaching the judge outside of the hearing of the jury and obtaining permission. The violation of a motion in limine can result in the court declaring a mistrial.

There are three types of Motions in Limine 1. Inclusionary - A motion asking the court to have something included in the trial. 2. Exclusionary - A motion asking the court to have something excluded in the trial. 3. Preclusionary - A motion asking the court to have something precluded in the trial

What appears to be going on in the case, not uncommon, is that the Campbell wants all the government's evidence against him before trial. Motions are being made to exclude and quash portions of it and we suspect if Campbell had his way all of it would remained sealed to keep out scrutinizing eyes.

The US Atty. may have the same position. Just the same, this seems to be an ongoing problem with the ND--seal certain cases and keep the press and public off of it.

We don't think that should be allowed for those who steal and misuse taxpayers dollars, especially to this extent when the state budgets are a mess. Or so they claim. There's always money for certain things that benefit certain someones it seems.

  11. So will there be a trial with a jury? If so, will the date or verdict be public?

Both good questions that we will have to wait and see the answers to.

He's politically connected. I'd say watch for a slap on the wrist to protect the others, still unamed, that were involved in this robbery of the people's money and trust.

We're watching rest assured and will report on new developments as they materialize.
