We're in shock over this one from a newspaper that is usually cowering to the BARD machine and their overbearing and insufferable creator (who is also Governor Bentley's communications director) Stephen "Steve" Bradley, but this time, they got it right. BRAVO!
BARD, it seems, is the new E.F. Hutton.
The Wall Street investment firm E.F. Hutton became a household name in the 1970s and 1980s with its slogan: "When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen."
Today, it's BARD -- the Business Alliance for Responsible Development -- that commands attention. When BARD talks, elected officials listen.
For the past half-dozen years, BARD has been at war with river protection groups over restrictions on building near waterways. And with major developers and large landholding corporations such as Alabama Power Co., Drummond Co. and USS Realty among its founders, BARD has pretty much gotten its way.
Two weeks ago, the new Jefferson County Commission was set to create a new county department to handle stormwater management. "We have to deal with stormwater. The best way to deal with it is to departmentalize it and say we are responsible for it, and we are going to do what we need to do," said Commissioner Joe Knight, who oversees land planning and development.
Then BARD called.
A resolution calling for the creation of a stormwater management department was pulled from last week's County Commission meeting.

ReplyDeleteAl.com moderators are spiking and stifling comments on the story. BARD stories invite a fair amount of comment because people know what they are and do not like their tactics. Last count was 5 comments. That is unusual.

This has been happening a lot since Pam Siddall came on board as publisher.

ReplyDeleteEither the money and pressure to conform are too much for cities and local governments or they are just a bunch of inept morons who are incapable of seeing a venomous snake (BARD) when it is right in their path.

There are officials in jail right now over corruption issues and some of them are the same ones who let BARD line their election coffers in exchange for favorable voting on their wants.
But who continues to skate and is rarely taken to task publicly?
